LESSON RATES & POLICIES FOR
SHADOW HILLS EQUESTRIAN CENTER

Policy Rules

​

  • Weight Limit: SHEC has a weight limit of 200 pounds.

  • Lesson Duration: All lessons are 45 minutes unless otherwise noted.

  • Booking and Payment: Lessons must be booked and paid for at least 24 hours in advance. Prices are listed on the next page. For lessons scheduled on Saturday or Sunday, payment is required by 1 pm on the Friday before.

  • Tacking and Grooming: Able-bodied students are responsible for tacking and grooming their horses and must be ready by the lesson start time. Please plan your arrival accordingly.

  • Late Arrivals: Additional time will not be added to your lesson if you are not ready at the scheduled start time.

  • Cancellations: A 24-hour notice is required to cancel or reschedule lessons. No make-ups or refunds will be given for lessons canceled within 24 hours of the scheduled time, and the missed lesson will be charged.

  • Weather Cancellations: Lessons will be automatically canceled if the temperature reaches 90°F or higher. You may reschedule within the week or wait for your next scheduled lesson. Arenas are closed during rainy weather, and lessons will be credited or rescheduled.

  • Waiver: You can download the Shadow Hills Equestrian Center Waiver Release [here].

  • Auditing Lessons: You are welcome to audit a lesson and meet the instructors. Please call ahead to make an appointment.

REQUIRED HORSEMANSHIP CLASS

All new and beginner riders must complete a waiver and a basic Horsemanship Class before starting riding lessons, regardless of previous experience. This class covers essential skills such as tacking, grooming, and familiarizing yourself with our facility's policies and procedures.

Once you finish the Horsemanship Class, you can book riding lessons in your preferred discipline: Bareback (no saddle), Western (saddle with a horn), or English (lighter saddle, no horn).

 

60-Minute Horsemanship Class Breakdown

 

Section 1: Haltering, Leading, and Grooming

  • Haltering: How to tie the knot, carry the rope, and lead the horse.

  • Leading: Moving the horse from the stall to the cross-tie area using quick-release snaps.

  • Hoof Care: Identifying hoof parts, picking up hooves, and cleaning them.

  • Grooming: Proper grooming techniques, tools, and their uses.

 

Section 2: Saddling and Bridling

  • Saddling: Selecting the right saddle, pad, cinch, or girth. Learning saddle placement, cinch tightening, and using the off-billet.

  • Bridling: Correctly placing the bit in the horse’s mouth and choosing/attaching reins.

 

Section 3: Preparing for Riding

  • Arena Entry: Walking the horse to the arena and ensuring the gate is closed.

  • Mounting: Walking the horse to the mounting block, checking the cinch/girth, and mounting from the correct side.

  • Riding: Using reins, directing the horse, and dismounting after the lesson.
